Good Morning Cabrillo Families!
Targeted Support and Improvement
Cabrillo was one of 26 FUSD schools identified by the state for targeted support and improvement (ATSI). Schools that meet the criteria for ATSI must collaborate with our educational partners to develop and implement a school-level plan to improve student outcomes.
The reason so many schools were identified by the state is largely due to Chronic Absenteeism. Students identified as chronically absent in the 2021-2022 school year were absent more than 10% of the school year. For Cabrillo, just over 25% of the students were chronically absent. And this is no surprise. Cabrillo families have done a great job following the Covid protocols developed at the peak of the pandemic as we emerged from distance learning. Last year we asked parents to keep their students home if they presented with very basic symptoms including headaches, sore throats, runny noses, fatigue, etc. We have come a long way since the return to school in August 2021, yet some students continue staying home when they experience the above symptoms. And this too should be no surprise as the Covid protocols are still on our district website.
It’s time to move on. The state of California officially has ended the state of emergency that was declared back in March 2020. Cabrillo has made significant gains this year reducing chronic absenteeism by 25%. But 20% is still too high so we will continue meeting with families through the school attendance and review process (SARP). I congratulate families for keeping their students home when they are indeed sick, presenting with a fever, diarrhea or vomiting. The Covid protocol charts have been taken down from the Cabrillo office and website. Cabrillo will continue providing masks to our students for their safety as well as others. This may be the enduring legacy of the pandemic.
California Math Council (CMC) Math Faire
Cabrillo is excited to bring back the Council of Mathematics who will be putting on a Math Faire all day long for students in grades TK - 6. The event is taking place on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 and yes I will be wearing my Pi Day tie to work on 3.14. The Cabrillo Elementary PTA is still in need of school-day volunteers to support Cabrillo’s upcoming Math Faire starting at 8:40 a.m. The event will include math activities and games, and we need volunteers to run each station. If you are interested in supporting this event, you can see a full list of available time slots and sign up on the PTA Sign Up Genius site. We will also be holding a Family Math Night in the evening of the 14th starting at 6:00. Come to Cabrillo and learn with your child.

Soccer at Cabrillo
Soccer season is back! We need to wait for our field to try out after this last and hopefully final set of heavy rains ends. The field will be lined and ready for our first match against Warwick on Monday, April 17. Girls games begin at 3:30 and boys games begin at 4:30. You can follow Cabrillo soccer on the school website under Teachers & Students>Mileage Club, Soccer, and Basketball.
Volunteering at Cabrillo
We invite parents to volunteer in the classroom. Before we can accept you as a volunteer, you will need to complete a CiviCore Application. When you volunteer on campus, you must:
- Sign in and out using our digital system for processing volunteers
- Wear a visitor badge at all times
- Remain under the supervision of a site employee (teacher) for the duration of your visit
