Quarantine Independent Study (QIS)
Posted 1/16/22

Good Morning and Happy Sunday Cabrillo Families,

Quarantine Independent Study (QIS)

Governor Newsom, CTA, Alameda County Office of Education, and Superintendent Cammack have made it very clear that the best place for students to learn is in the classroom. The pandemic has resulted in students being absent either due to self quarantine (SQ) or district quarantine (DQ). Closing schools is not an option unless we are mandated to do so due to a shortage of personnel. Students at home due to positive COVID-19 test results or exposure need an opportunity to maintain their learning. FUSD has two solutions we implemented last week that I would like to share with you.  Let me explain the procedures for short and long term independent study contracts.

Short-Term Independent Study (3-14 cumulative SQ or DQ) Students having a cumulative 3-14 days SQ or DQ are placed on a short-term independent study. You will either receive a phone call from the office or an email from the principal asking you to come to Cabrillo to sign a short-term independent study and pick up a packet of grade level work. Students complete one day of work as specified in the packet for each day they are in quarantine. Return the packet of completed work when students return to school.

Long-Term Independent Study (15 or more cumulative SQ or DQ) Students having a cumulative of 15 or more days quarantine will receive a phone call from the office and an email from the principal asking you and your student to digitally sign an independent study contract (linked in the email from Principal Thornley). Families will be offered a chromebook and/or a hotspot if needed. There are 11 different fields of information that need to be completed, some of which will be provided in the email. Press submit form after completing all required fields. This is routed to the director of elementary education whose office will add your student to the virtual academy. Cabrillo will save your student’s spot in their current classroom to which they will return at the end of their quarantine.

COVID Test Kit Reimbursements

Four at-home COVID-19 tests will be available starting January 19 at covidtests.gov. The tests will be completely free—there are no shipping costs and you don’t need to enter a credit card number. The Biden administration has mandated private health plans cover the cost of over-the-counter COVID-19 test kits at up to $12 per test ($24 for a test kit with two tests). Consumers can submit receipts for reimbursement to their insurance company for a refund.

Vaccination Events Going Forward
The Friday, January 7 vaccination event was a tremendous success. Bay Area Community Health (BACH) vaccinated 470 individuals in a four-hour span! Due to the success of the vaccination events, BACH and Cabrillo are partnering for monthly vaccination events through June. The dates are listed below:

  • Wednesday, February 9th (2:00 - 6:00)
  • Wednesday, March 9th (2:00 - 6:00)
  • Wednesday,  March 30th (2:00 - 6:00)
  • Wednesday, April 27th (2:00 - 6:00)
  • Wednesday, May 18th (2:00 - 6:00)
  • Wednesday, June 8 (2:00 - 6:00)

Cabrillo will provide the registration link via Bright Arrow and our monthly newsletter when we receive it from BACH.

The next two weeks of surge may represent a challenge but it is one your Cabrillo team of educators is ready to meet. We are here for the community.
