Principal Thornley’s Weekly Message, Week 2, Distance Learning

Principal Thornley’s Video Message

Good Morning Cabrillo Families,

We are moving into our first week of school starting Wednesday, August 26 at 8:30 am. A lot of work has gone into making sure the first day of distance learning is a success. Please support your teachers by making sure your students are awake by 7:30, dressed and ready for class starting at 8:30 am. Teachers are taking attendance then submitting their attendance as they always do via our student information system. Mrs. Keith will be monitoring the attendance - a phone call to families with absent students will go out as it always does.

Teacher Communications
Your teachers sent an email using the address registered with our student information system detailing the schedule for instruction, links to be used for live instruction (either Google Meet or Zoom) as well as the link to their distance learning platform (Google Classroom or Seesaw). Some of those emails bounced back in some cases due to typos in the registered email address.  If you did not receive a communication from your teacher, please send an email to our attendance clerk Laurie Keith lkeith@fusdk12.net indicating you did not receive the Friday communication. Please list the first and last name of your child as well as your email address. She will be contacting you so that she can update your communication information in Illuminate.

Materials Distribution
We have been distributing chromebooks and will continue to do so. Contact either Mrs. Sandoval kmartinezsandoval@fusdk12.net or Mrs. Keith lkeith@fusdk12.net to arrange for a time after 1:00 on weekdays and I will meet you to distribute a device. As of now, 165 students have been signed up to receive a chromebook. Each child will need a device.

Next up is materials distribution. The teachers have been bagging up student materials to include textbooks and school supplies. Distribution will take place starting Tuesday, August 25 with kindergarten and end Wednesday, September 2 with fourth grade. The schedule is below. This will be a contactless distribution. Please drive into the horseshoe with your student(s) name on a piece of paper with grade level and teacher name taped to a passenger side window. Remain in the car. Either open the trunk or a door facing the school and the materials will be placed in your vehicle. Any family members walking up on their grade level distribution day will wait at the table near the marquee. Cones are in place to support your social distancing. Please wear a mask when coming on campus. Please bring support as the bags will be heavy.

Google Usernames and Passwords
Our IT department was able to solve a problem and generate the student usernames and passwords. I mailed these to Cabrillo families on Friday. Students will need the username and password to log on to a Cabrillo chromebook. If they are using a family owned device, they will not need these credentials for the Monday meeting but will need them for the first day of school.

We can make this work but we will need your support in doing so. The teachers are doing their part by developing lessons, preparing weekly schedules, selecting support materials available online, and ensuring student learning loss is halted. From our families we need support making sure the students are ready for class at 8:30 every morning. This means waking up by 7:30, getting dressed for school, and eating a healthy breakfast. You will not hear an 8:30 bell go off in your household but know that one is ringing and your teachers will be ready for the kids - make sure the kids are ready for their teachers.

Stay Safe
